Train central venous catheterisation from puncture to placement

The simulator is used for training ultrasound-guided central venous catheterisation via the axillary vein and the internal jugular vein, as well as the landmark technique. An introductory training block helps learners acquire the basics of ultrasound-guided puncture. Various complications can be simulated, and when a step is performed incorrectly, the error shows immediately.

The simulator comes with three interchangeable pads for the puncture area: a landmark puncture pad, an ultrasound puncture pad and a transparent cannulation block. The pads are placed over the right upper chest and the right side of the neck and reproduce bones, veins, arteries and the upper lung at life size. Carotid artery pulsation can be felt on the landmark pad.

The ultrasound pad is used to practise internal jugular vein puncture under ultrasound and to learn how to distinguish vein from artery on the monitor. The transparent block gives a three-dimensional view of the anatomy and is used to train guide wire insertion. Trainees practise safer puncture, how to avoid complications and how to place the catheter in the correct position.

Applications

  • Landmark CVC via the subclavian vein, supraclavicular approach and internal jugular vein
  • Ultrasound-guided CVC via the internal jugular vein and axillary approach
  • The full procedure from puncture to catheter placement in the superior vena cava
  • Anatomical understanding of the vessel routes
  • Simulated complications: arterial puncture, pneumothorax and catheter malposition
