Practise sternal intraosseous access and infusion

This simulator has been developed for hands-on instruction in sternal intraosseous infusion and prepares healthcare professionals at different levels of training for the procedure. Anatomical landmarks and soft tissue with a lifelike feel allow positioning and puncture to be practised realistically.

The model replicates access to the marrow space of the manubrium. The replaceable bone insert gives a lifelike feel when intraosseous access is established and can be used both for basic puncture training and for exercises with flashback and fluid infusion.

The bone insert can be filled with simulated blood, so correct placement produces a visible flashback. Fluids can then be infused through a correctly established access, allowing the complete procedure to be practised – from identifying the landmarks and performing the puncture to administering an infusion. During training, the IO device is held at a 90° angle to the sternum.

The inserts can be used multiple times. Rotating the insert gives access to different puncture sites; the manufacturer recommends approximately 10 punctures per insert, with a maximum of 12.
