Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lung disease where airway flow is prevented. It is characterized by changes in lung tissue caused by infection and secretions that thus create obstruction in the respiratory tract. There may be more drowning cells and glands, enlarged muscle cells and infiltration of the mucous membranes with cells commonly seen in infection. Depending on the severity of COPD, there are various degrees of chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema. Symptoms are cough and shortness of breath, and after a period the lungs can stop functioning completely.
