This extremely detailed model is a 3D section of compact bone tissue, demonstrating structures at 80x normal size. All layers of the bone tissue are shown in cross-section and vertical section, as well as a two-plane section through the internal structure of the marrow.
The model demonstrates the typical structure of compact bone and helps the student understand structure and function. At the very end is the periosteum that surrounds the bone as a membranous layer. Next is a layer of compact bone tissue containing osteons. In the center of the osteons run blood vessels and nerves. Haversian and Volkmann's canals as well as endosteum and bone marrow with both yellow and red marrow are also shown.
