Lumbar puncture and epidural training with realistic tactile feedback
This simulator is a lumbar spine training model for practising lumbar puncture and epidural procedures. It provides realistic tactile feedback and has a fluid supply and pressure system, allowing students to collect simulated CSF and measure opening pressure.
The replaceable spinal insert consists of skin, subcutaneous layer, connective tissue and lumbar vertebrae. The iliac crests, vertebrae L2–L5, ligamentum flavum, epidural space and dura are represented, and the needle can be inserted between the vertebrae. Needle resistance feels lifelike, with a distinct pop as the needle passes the ligamentum flavum and the dura.
Pressure is adjusted with push buttons and shown by LEDs as low, medium or high. The procedure can be practised in the left lateral decubitus or sitting position, and the trainer can also be used to practise aseptic technique and local anaesthesia at the puncture site.
Applications
- Lumbar puncture in the sitting or left lateral decubitus position
- Epidural procedures
- Collection of simulated CSF and measurement of opening pressure
- Aseptic technique and local anaesthesia at the puncture site
- Palpation of anatomical landmarks
