Practise infant lumbar puncture in the correct position
Infants commonly require lumbar puncture to collect a sample of cerebrospinal fluid, measure CSF pressure or give an intrathecal injection. This simulator represents a 10–12-month-old infant in the left lateral decubitus position with the neck and knees flexed, approximating the fetal position the procedure requires.
The embedded iliac crest and the spine are palpable, so the correct puncture site can be located. Puncture can be performed at L3–L4, L4–L5 or L5–S1. As the needle is advanced slowly, a small give is felt on entering the correct space, and simulated CSF flows when the position is correct.
The spine, spinal canal and skin pad are removable and replaceable, making training simple to prepare. The simulator arrives attached to a sturdy board for stability during practice.
